Paper Title
Enhanced Image Transmission over Wireless Sensor Networks using Pixel Interleaving with Wavelets
Abstract
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are an important modern technology for large-scale monitoring because they provide sensor measurements at high temporal and spatial resolutions. This paper proposes a new method for enhancing the quality of images transmitted over WSNs. WSNs present significant constraints on the energy and bandwidth of the communication system. WSNs must be protected from data loss caused by wireless channel effects. Images transmitted over a wireless channel can be corrupted because of noise and fading. Images are transmitted block by block through a wireless channel, and severe fading can damage entire image blocks. The proposed Boundary Interpolation (BI) algorithm using wavelets has been adapted here to reconstruct lost image blocks at the receiver based on correlations between the lost block and its neighbours. The BI algorithm using wavelets with a pixel interleaver has also been investigated. The pixel interleaver changes the pixel sequence of the original image prior to transmission. A block lost through a wireless channel only affects an individual pixel, and the lost pixels at the receiver side can be recovered by applying the BI algorithm using wavelets. Different scenarios are suggested to enhance the proposed systems. The results showed that the proposed BI algorithm using wavelets with a pixel interleaver is more efficient in terms of the mean squared error (MSE) and peak signal–to-noise ratio (PSNR).
