Prevalence of Schistosomiasis and The Associated Risk Factors among School Children in Um-Asher area, Khartoum, Sudan
Abstract
Schistosomiasis remains one of the most common parasitic diseases worldwide, this study was proposed to determine the prevalence of Schistosomiasis and its associated risk factors among primary school children in Um-Asher area. This was a cross-sectional study conducted among 170 primary schools students in Al Um-Asher area from November 2017 to February 2018. Urine and stool sample were collected and examined for schistosomiasis infections. Moreover, data on socio-demographic characteristics as well as associated risk factors were collected using questionnaire. The overall prevalence of Schistosoma heamatobium was (12.9 %) while for Schistosoma mansoni was (2.9 5). Additionally, male’s recorded higher prevalence (60%) of Schistosoma mansoni than female’s (40%), however, both were equally infected with Schistosoma heamatobium (50%). With regard to the risk factors, distance of residence from water source, source of drinking water etc. are some of the factors that relatively associated with the infection. Therefore, application appropriate integrated control program will significantly reduce the disease transmission as well as the clinical impact.
