The Efficacy of the Genre-Based Approach in Teaching Academic Writing
Abstract
This study aims to ascertain the effectiveness of the genre-based approach in developing the skills to write academic texts. 100 undergraduates participated in this study. The study adopted a pre/post- assessment of the students’ writing performances. T-tests were used to compare the results of the pre and post-tests. The study reveals that this approach is potent in developing students’ skills in writing academic texts because it enables students to gradually build their skills by analyzing and emulating good models of texts. Thus, this implies that the approach is effectual because it can simultaneously enhance students’ grammar, knowledge of subject matter, and awareness of stylistic conventions of academic writing.
