‘Wolf’: Children’s Understanding of A Predator Animal in Turkey

Abstract
This study examines the understandings of school children in Turkey, aged seven, eleven and fourteen years, held of wolf ‘a predator animal’ commonly seen in Turkish epics and being as a hero in these epics differently from the other country’s tales. In the first step thirty students in Istanbul in three different schools were interviewed individually and cued into the discussion by the researchers saying the word, wolf, and asking them to say what they knew about this animal. Results showed that students held not only biological knowledge but also rich social and cultural beliefs and understandings and the pedagogical implications are discussed.
