Parental Involvement and Academic Performance of Grade Eight Students in Public Schools District I, Quezon City
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate level of home and school-based parental involvement and its relationship to students’ academic performance during the pandemic period. Barriers to parental involvement were also examined. One hundred twenty parents of Grade 8 students from six public secondary schools in District I, Quezon City participated in this study. Using descriptive frequency distribution, percentages, and weighted Mean, results showed that most of the parent respondents were females and coming from 42 – 50 age group. For their educational level, most of them were high school graduates, and almost a half of the parents had fulltime jobs. Also, data revealed that the school-based and homebased parental involvement levelswere very highinmotivations and rewards; home-based involvement level was very high in environment for learning. Parents considered child autonomy and lack of knowledge and skills to help their children’s schoolwork as their major barriers to their involvement in student learning. As revealed by the Pearson Correlation Coefficient with 0.05 level of significance, there is no significant relationship between parental involvement and age, marital status, educational attainment, and occupation, but there is a significant relationship between parental involvement and academic performance of students.
