MANAGING TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED WORK-BASED LEARNING AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AT TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS: CASE EXEMPLARS OF COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AT MALAYSIA AND NIGERIA

Abstract
Technology-enhanced work-based learning (TEWBL) and vocational education (VE) are increasingly popular among colleges/universities emphasizing the importance of the needs to involve undergraduates in employer engagement in real life contexts. Literature revealed that both the TEWBL and VE had potentials to develop soft skills among learners undergoing trainings at tertiary institutions. This paper reports part of a larger scale study to illustrate exemplary cases for managing TEWBL in Malaysia and VE in Nigeria. Mixed-methods is the research design involving online survey to be analyzed quantitatively as well as data collected from Focus Group Discussion (FGD) in Malaysia and ‘Exemplary-Case Analysis’ (ECA) in Nigeria being analyzed qualitatively. Quantitative data analysis on e-survey including students’ attitude towards and experience gained through project-based learning showing a favourable positive attitude towards the project with higher percentage exceeding 70% in teamwork and collaboration. Qualitative data analysis from FGD revealed evidence of strong positive interdependence among members. The challenge made towards producing original zero waste video also showed the collaborative work among team members with development of leadership skills for story boarding, directing, acting, shooting and editing. ECA also revealed that ‘Problem-based Learning’ (PBL) is an instructional model that is encouraged for further study related to ‘Technical and Vocational Education and Training’ (TVET) education since this model focuses on solving real-world problem in technology-enhanced work-based learning (TEWBL). Students are given opportunities for hands-on experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) related studies with problem-solving and engagement activities that stimulate their higher order thinking.
