Paper Title
A Survey Of ICT Integration In EFL Teacher Education In Vietnam
Abstract
Although the use of information and communication technology (ICT) has become widespread and provided many benefits and opportunities to both economies and education in developing countries, the issue of implementation of ICT in language teaching and learning has not yet received appropriate consideration especially for teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in Vietnam. Despite the availability of emerging technologies in Vietnamese schools and colleges, many beginning teachers and pre-service teachers do not have the necessary knowledge or experience to incorporate ICT into their classrooms. A model of teacher knowledge incorporating technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge (TPACK) is being adopted in Vietnamese pre-service teacher education to help address this situation. Although the importance of the TPACK model is widely accepted, extensive research has not yet been conducted in Vietnamese contexts. Therefore, my research is intended to investigate teacher educators attitudes and current knowledge about using technology in ELT and their use and modeling of technology enhanced learning in ELT. The study will include a survey, two focus groups (Phase 1) and case studies (Phase 2), drawing on both quantitative and qualitative data collected from teacher education institutions in Vietnam. The study will use the TPACK model as a lens to make a focus on ICT on ELT. Results of phase 1 shows that EFL Vietnamese teachers have high profiles of pedagogical knowledge (PK) and content knowledge (CK), but lower profiles of technological knowledge (TK). However, they have quite positive attitudes toward ICT and frequent usage of ICT in the classrooms although ICT integration is mostly limited in some English subjects. Two case studies will be conducted to investigate how EFL teacher educators model their teaching using ICT enhanced learning. However, this paper is only the short report of the survey results.
