AI-POWERED LEARNING: DEEPSEEK’S APPLICATION IN CHINESE NEWS REPORTING TEACHING
Abstract
This study investigates the application of DeepSeek, an advanced AI writing assistant, in Chinese news reporting teaching, exploring its potential to transform journalism education. As digital technologies reshape media landscapes, the integration of AI tools into pedagogical practices presents both opportunities and challenges for developing core journalistic competencies. Through a mixed-methods approach—combining quantitative analysis of student performance and qualitative feedback from instructors and learners—the research evaluates how DeepSeek aids in news gathering, structuring articles, language refinement, and adherence to journalistic conventions.
A controlled experiment was conducted with two groups of journalism students: one using DeepSeek for writing assistance and another following traditional teaching methods. Results demonstrate significant improvements in writing efficiency, structural coherence, and adherence to professional standards among AI-assisted learners.
From the qualitative interviews with instructors and learners, while participants reported high satisfaction with real-time feedback and personalised learning support. Besides, the study also identified critical limitations regarding narrative depth, investigative rigour, as well as an over-reliance on AI for creativity and critical thinking in AI-assisted work.
The study contributes to AI-mediated journalism education, offering evidence-based strategies for implementing intelligent writing assistants in news reporting training in Chinese. It concludes with recommendations for optimizing human-AI collaboration to cultivate next-generation journalists who can harness technological advantages while preserving essential reporting values.
