The Conceptual Challenges for Food Security: Reducing Vegetable Loss and Waste for Sustainable Development (The Case of Georgia)

Abstract
The article examines a fundamental issue of food security: the losses and waste generated within the vegetable supply chain. Based on bibliographic research, the study identifies the level of understanding regarding this issue. Utilizing data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia, it evaluates vegetable losses through both absolute and relative indicators. The analysis of the obtained data determines the severity of the problem and its primary contributing factors. Through the survey, the study identifies consumer-level vegetable waste, comparing these findings with similar global indicators. It investigates the key factors contributing to the issue of vegetable waste. It is established that reducing the amount of vegetable losses and waste is a necessary prerequisite for sustainable consumption and production. The directions for sustainable vegetable production and consumption are identified, along with the role of the state. At the conclusion of the paper, recommendations are proposed to minimize vegetable waste. Keywords - Vegetable, Supply Chain, Loss, Waste, Sustainable Development
