A Novel Approach to CO2-Free Hydrogen Production from End-of-Life Tyres Using Hybrid Microwave Plasma Gasification (HMPG)
Abstract
The increasing accumulation of end-of-life tyres (ELTs), estimated at one billion annually, poses serious environmental and public health challenges. Traditional disposal methods contribute to pollution, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable recycling technologies. This study presents an innovative Hybrid Microwave Plasma Gasification (HMPG) process for converting ELTs into high-purity hydrogen, carbon black, and acetic acid with zero CO2 emissions. Developed by Green Science Corporation, HMPG employs a two-stage system: a pyrolys is unit and a decomposer/reformer utilizing a steam plasma torch. This configuration enhances thermal efficiency and ensures complete carbon conversion while minimizing contaminants such as tar and sulfur compounds. Simulation results using Aspen Plus confirm the high efficiency of the HMPG process in hydrogen production. 3 tonnes/day feeding of ELTs produces a yield of 350 kg/day H2. The tail gas reformer (TGR) further enhances the process by recycling CO2 emissions through the Boudouard reaction, converting char into carbon black or synthesizing CO for methanol-to-acetic acid production. This closed-loop design eliminates waste, reduces operational costs, and supports circular economy principles. Furthermore, a fraction of the produced hydrogen is used in fuel cells to generate electricity, ensuring energy self-sufficiency. The integration of microwave plasma torches optimizes reaction kinetics and gasification temperatures, eliminating the need for extensive downstream purification. While the HMPG process exhibits exceptional efficiency and scalability, it remains a theoretical model in the case of ELTs requiring experimental validation. If successfully deployed, HMPG can revolutionize hydrogen production from ELTs, aligning with global decarbonization goals and advancing sustainable energy solutions.
