TOWARDS A CIRCULAR BUILT ENVIRONMENT: DEVELOPING A CIRCULARITY ASSESSMENT TOOL

Abstract
Although the circular economy has garnered increasing global interest within the AECO industry, its applications largely remain confined to conceptual frameworks and literature reviews. This highlights a critical gap in the translation of circular economy principles into structured design strategies. In this regard, there is a need to develop comprehensive frameworks that integrate circular design strategies and its components, enabling practical implementation and fostering systemic change within the industry. This study aims to develop an assessment tool to measure the circularity of the buildings; to implement circular strategies and design thinking into the built environment, particularly to the buildings. Methodology of this study consists of three stages:(1) Developing a dataset for materials, (2) Evaluating buildings according to the Shearing Layers, and (3) Implementing the Method on a case study and reaching the Circularity Score. Material dataset development is conducted through Excel, Pandas-Python. The framework categorized on the bases of Shearing Layers: Site, Structure, Skin, Services, Space Plan, Stuff. Calculating the circularity score depends on the core principles of mathematics and the measuring tool is formed by using Python. This study's insights provide valuable guidance on circular design and inspiration for the future research. Keywords - Built Environment, Circularity Assessment Tool, Circular Economy, Sustainability.
