Paper Title
“ONE MOMENT IN TIME” - HIGHER EDUCATION MULTICULTURAL MUSICKING PERFORMANCE

Abstract
In the South African context, student teachers are bound to gain their first experiences of teaching standing in front of multicultural sets of learners in classrooms. An integrated multicultural approach with interconnected African and global perspectives can promote Music Education (MusEd)as part of Creative Arts, as a developer of multicultural musicking. Such adapted teaching and learning activities can benefit student teachers through the integration of sonic knowledge, praxial activities, biographic development, dance movements, drama storytelling and social and cultural cohesion and belonging. The research continuously explores the Samuel and Van Wyk Force Field Model (2008) consisting of precarious push and pull forces. The four forces are the contextual (social, political, and historical factors), institutional (Higher Education Institutions - HEIs), biographical (authentic), and programmatic (curricula) forces that influence Higher Education teaching practices and program content. The research question is: How are the challenges (pushing forces) and opportunities (pulling forces) experienced by student teachers in a multicultural musicking performance? This research adopts vignette research as a methodological approach and captures moments of creative arts learning in time as the student teachers actively engage in their preparation and performance experiences. The aim of the research is therefore to present findings towards Elliot’s praxis philosophy that is integrated with Dewey’s experiential learning and linked to Spencer’s action theory in the pursuit of a multicultural social cohesion bouquet. The findings evident are the teaching and learning relevance of today; integration of multi-disciplines; multicultural social cohesion and curiosity in practices and performances. These outcomes will contribute to the multicultural national and international scholarly education landscape. Keywords - Multicultural; Musicking; Sonic and Social Cohesion; Vignette Methodology
