Catalyzing Organizational Growth: The Strategic Dynamics of Leadership and Technology in Achieving Sustainability in Omani Manufacturing
Abstract
The current research aimed to critically assess the impact of innovation on sustainability, emphasizing the mediating role of top management support and the moderating role of Industry 4.0 technologies in the relationship between innovation and sustainability within the manufacturing sector in Oman. A questionnaire-based survey was administered to collect data from 294 top- and middle-level managers from various manufacturing firms in Oman, ensuring a representative sample of the sector's leadership. The research employed Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze the relationships between the variables and test the proposed hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that innovation serves as a significant positive driver of sustainability in the manufacturing sector. Furthermore, the study highlighted the critical role of top management support as a mediator in this relationship. Specifically, innovation was found to influence the level of top management support, which in turn positively impacted the sustainability outcomes of the firms. This mediation underscores the importance of leadership in translating innovative practices into sustainable performance.
However, the study did not find sufficient evidence to support the moderating role of Industry 4.0 technologies in strengthening the relationship between innovation and sustainability. This suggests that while technological advancements are crucial for organizational transformation, their direct moderating influence on innovation-driven sustainability may be limited in the context of Omani manufacturing firms. These findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge by offering empirical insights into the rarely explored mediating role of top management support in fostering sustainability through innovation. From a practical standpoint, the research provides valuable guidance for business leaders and policymakers in Oman, indicating that fostering innovation and ensuring active involvement of top management can significantly enhance sustainability performance. The study further recommends that firms develop strategic frameworks to strengthen top management support, thereby ensuring that innovation is effectively leveraged to meet sustainability challenges. While Industry 4.0 technologies may not directly moderate this relationship, their integration into innovation processes remains a critical aspect for future research and practice in the evolving global industrial landscape.
