CUSTOMS OF DIBAWON-NEW CORELLA IN THE MODERN ERA: A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

Abstract
Customs play an important role in the identity of every nation, as they reflect the traditions, beliefs, and arts unique to that nation, including the customs of indigenous peoples. However, with the advancement of modernization around the world, the cultural values of different groups in society are often sidelined. In response to this issue, this research is conducted to explore the customs of indigenous peoples in order to highlight and value the national identity of a country. This study specifically focuses on the Dibabawon indigenous group in Barangay Poblacion, New Corella, Davao del Norte, Philippines. The primary objective is to explore the various customs of the Dibabawon, which reflect their values. The study seeks to uncover the status of these customs and emphasize their importance in the context of global change. The researchers employed a phenomenological approachusing interviews and surveys. The study found that the Dibabawon’s customs—such as their livelihood, clothing, beliefs, superstitions, dance, and music—mirror their culture, tradition, and art. These customs have helped preserve their identity. The data also revealed that the indigenous people pass down their customs to the younger generation and organize activities or programs to maintain these traditions.Because of these values and the ongoing practice of the Dibabawon customs, they have successfully preserved their cultural heritage up to the present day.
