CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS FROM THE AERIAL PARTS OF HEDYSARUM ALPINUM L

Abstract
Hedysarum alpinum L is an important medicinal plant used in traditional system of Mongolian medicine since the time immemorial. In traditional medicine, Mongolian and Tibet doctors named Hedysarum bre-sarad, bre-ga, or man-ga, and used it to make stronger, stop desudation, open an abscess repair cardiac action, strengthen the immune system and improve the energy of the body.Extracts and metabolites of this plant, particularly those from flowers and leaves, possess useful pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial and hepatoprotective effects. In this study, the chemical investigation of the ethanolic extract from the arial parts of H. alpinum L led to isolation of five compounds including one xanthone (1), one isoflavone (2) and three flavone (3-5). Their structure were established based on analysis of their spectroscopic data and comparison with literature. In the current research, the isolated compound 2 was reported for the first time from H. alpinum L. In addition, total phenolic compounds and flavonoids were determined using spectrophotometer methods of the extracts from the leaves and flowers of H. alpinum L, respectively. The total phenolic content of the H.alpinum leaves and flowers were 5.86 ± 0.164 mg/g and 6.25 ± 0.082 mg/g as gallic acid equivalents. The extract of the H.alpinum leaves and flowers contains flavonoids 2.82 ± 0.025 mg/g and 1.18 ± 0.026 mg/g as rutin equivalents.
