FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME OF PT. IKI MAKASSAR PRODUCTION WORKERS

Abstract
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common occupational disease resulting from various workplace factors. The complexity of work processes and tools exposes workers to risks of both accidents and occupational diseases, including CTS, especially among production workers. The ship production, repair, and modification areas at PT. IndustriKapal Indonesia (Persero) Makassar are among the most high-risk work environments. This study aims to identify the factors associated with CTS among production workers at PT. IKI (Persero) Makassar. This quantitative study employs a cross-sectional approach. The population consists of production workers at PT. IKI (Persero) Makassar, with a final sample of 93 workers selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate methods, with chi-square tests employed for statistical analysis. The findings indicate significant associations between CTS and years of service (p = 0.016), repetitive movements (p < 0.001), work posture (p = 0.003), vibration exposure (p = 0.044), and Phalen’s test results (p < 0.001). In contrast, no significant relationships were found with age (p = 0.962), nutritional status (p = 0.251), or hours of work per day (p = 0.108). Multivariate analysis revealed that repetitive movements (OR = 33.33) were the most dominant factor influencing CTS among workers. It is recommended that the company implement regulations on regular breaks to allow workers to exercise or stretch their hands. Additionally, advanced medical examinations should be provided for workers reporting CTS-related complaints to prevent further complications.
