IMPLEMENTATION OF KANGOROO MOTHER CARE IN LOW BIRTH WEIGHT MANAGEMENT IN BUGIS AND MAKASSAR CULTURES: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract
Low birth weight infants increase the risk of morbidity and mortality, particularly in premature infants. The prevalence of anxiety and depression in mothers of LBW infants is high, while infants weighing less than 2500g are at great risk of neonatal mortality and health complications. Interventions such as Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) have been shown to be effective in reducing mortality rates of low birth weight infants, although implementation still needs improvement.’. This study aims to determine how the implementation of the kangaroo mother care method in overcoming the incidence of low birth weight in Bugis and Makassar cultures. The design used was literature review, articles were collected using search engines such as online database journals that provide free journal articles in PDF format, such as: Pubmed, Proquest, Google Scholar and EBSCO. Other sources such as Textbooks from libraries, National Health Reports, Theses and Dissertations were also used. The criteria for articles used were those published in 2013-2023. Based on the articles collected, it was found that KMC implementation and traditional practices influenced by local culture play an important role in newborn health, especially in communities with strong cultures such as Bugis and Makassar. This study also highlights the importance of community-based interventions and health worker education to address challenges in neonatal care practices. These recommendations emphasise the importance of holistic and community-based approaches in improving the care of low birth weight infants, especially in unique cultural contexts such as Bugis and Makassar. Implementation of education and training, promotion of KMC, cultural adaptation in health services, health system improvement, and ongoing research are key measures proposed to achieve better health outcomes for newborns.
