Paper Title
TECHNOECONOMIC EVALUATION OF OPTIMISING THE AKIM ODA UPSTREAM WATER TREATMENT PLANT
Abstract
One of the evaluative problems being faced currently by the Ghana Water Company Ltd Akim Oda, at their high-lift section of the treatment plant is the high-power consumption during the raining season when the plant siteis flooded. As a result, the company has to operate with a single pump with flow controlled by valve due to the adverse effects of the flood on their VFDs. At the plant five 400 kW capacity induction motors which are connected in parallelis used for their operations. AC motors consume more, Variable FrequencyDrive(VFD) technique is a common technique where the frequency of the motor is varied by changing the input frequency to control the speed of the motor. These drives enable large motors like what is used at the plant to start smoothly and constantly adjust the speed with the use of VFDs. It helps reduce the system operational cost, provides operational benefits and also optimises the system by enhancing its efficiency. In the present work, modelling, simulation and analysis of a VFD using Matlab/Simulink model was carried out. The flow of pump has been controlled by throttling valve and VFD and experimental work was carried out, and comparative statement base on the technoeconomic evaluation of optimising the plant is given in this paper.
