KNOWLEDGE OF CONTENT AND STUDENT (KCS) AND SELF-CONFIDENCE OF PROSPECTIVE MATHEMATICS TEACHER STUDENTS IN NUMBER MATERIAL
Abstract
Self-confidence and knowledge about content and students are two essential things in the learning process in the classroom. The results of the educational research literature agree that prospective teachers must have good content and student knowledge, and an adequate level of self-confidence must accompany this. This research aims to describe the knowledge of content and students and the Self-confidence of prospective mathematics teacher students in a number of materials. The methodology employed in this study is qualitative descriptive research, with purposive sampling as the sampling method. The subjects of the research were two pre-service teacher of Mathematics Education Study Program. The instruments used in the research included questions testing the subjects' abilities in pedagogy and student content. Additionally, the research utilized a questionnaire to assess the self-confidence of prospective teachers. This study focused on one subdomain, academic performance, with indicators of academic ability and motivation. The data analysis technique employed in this research was qualitative descriptive analysis, aimed at describing prospective mathematics teacher students' Knowledge of Content and Student (KCS) and self-confidence. The results showed that both subjects had good knowledge of the content and students. The test and interview results revealed that both subjects could identify and explain student errors as well as understand the types of errors related to specific content, were able to recognize students who made similar errors, and understand the level of student understanding of the material being taught, understand the sequence of student understanding and identify topics—or difficult or easy math activities at various age levels. In addition, the research subjects' self-confidence level was also assessed. The results show that both subjects have a high level of self-confidence, with self-confidence percentages reaching 83.93% and 82.14%, which are in the excellent self-confidence category.
