THE ROLE OF MENTOR SCIENTISTS IN TRANSFORMING SCHOOLS: IMMERSIVE SCIENCE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES
Abstract
The current article presents models of mentoring in which mentor scientists played an important role in student and teacher science development of research knowledge and skills, and science identity. Mentoring programs can be applied to a number of science areas, and different mentoring models can be implementing in settings, such as formal or non-formal educational contexts. In the current article, two examples of science mentoring projects are described, featuring innovative science, aiming at increasing STEM and science literacy among students and teachers. Additionally, the programs’ structure and goals were designed to increase science literacy, public understanding of science and enhance academic motivation besides specialized scientific knowledge.
