Exploring the Speaking Performance Through Local Context Among Thai Undergraduate Learners
Abstract
The purpose of this exploratory study aimed at finding the language features used and learners’ interests toward local context among Thai undergraduate students. The random convenient sampling method was employed in this study. The number of participants was 40 learner at the private educational institute in Thailand. The two methods of data collection was employed in this research study. The descriptive analysis of the language features applied by Thai EFL learners was used to show the frequent words and common mistakes in describing the local topics. Moreover, the result of quantitative data was used to illustrate the students’ attention to cultural context. The findings can be concluded that the common mistakes mostly occurred due to L1 transfer. For the learner’s perception, more than 80% of the learners found that it was beneficial to study cultural topics. From this research findings, it could support the EFL teachers in improving learning material for second language classroom as the pedagogical implication for enhancing EFL learners’ oral performance.
