Towards Resilient and Equitable Communities: The Role of Compassionate Cities in Addressing the Global Climate Crisis
Abstract
The Anthropocene is being presented as the new geological epoch of humanity, defined by the profound and lasting impact of human activities on the Earth system.1 Climate-related hazards such as floods, droughts, storms, rising sea levels, and insufficient precipitation lead to an increasingly vulnerable scenario and exacerbate inequality. With more frequent and intense climatic events, the most vulnerable people face increased challenges that threaten their well-being. Thus, compassionate cities present themselves as an innovative alternative to care for the most vulnerable in times of extreme crises. This article aims to develop an integrated model for the creation of Compassionate Cities as a response to the global climate crisis. The proposed model combines the best practices and innovations from the "All with You" programs in Spain and Latin America and "Ambitions for Palliative and End of Life Care" in the United Kingdom, aiming to create resilient and supportive communities that can effectively face environmental, social, and health crises, promoting climate justice and collective well-being.
