Barriers and Opportunities for Telemedicine’s Implementation in Developing Countries

Abstract
This study aims to present the state-of-the-art of telemedicine research, focusing on its employment in developing countries. Following Prisma guidelines, a total of 99 articles published between 2011 and 2023 were reviewed, extracting information about the main opportunities that telemedicine’s implementation represents for emerging nations and the most significant barriers it faces. This study offers pertinent contributions to the field’s discussion. Firstly, it confirms that, for lower-resource settings, its increase in the availability of and access to primary healthcare is a crucial benefit obtained. Secondly, it identifies relevant benchmarks to be adapted and applied by policy-makers and implementers who seek to increase telemedicine initiatives’ likelihood of success. Lastly, it categorizes its reviewed information in an organized way, allowing future research to access findings from the reviewed literature seamlessly.
