THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERCEIVED MATERNAL INVOLVEMENT AND ACADEMIC MOTIVATION: AN INVESTIGATION ON THE MEDIATING EFFECT OF FILIAL PIETY

Abstract
Maternal involvement plays a crucial role in students' academic achievement. Unfortunately, scant attention has been given to the examination of cultural factors that may influence the link between maternal involvement and academic motivation. Filial piety, a traditional Confucian value, places emphasis on the virtues of respect and obedience towards parents. Within the construct of filial piety, two distinct dimensions can be discerned: reciprocal filial piety and authoritarian filial piety. Reciprocal filial piety underscores the significance of establishing an intimate emotional bond between mother and child, while authoritarian filial piety emphasizes the obligatory nature of displaying obedience toward one's mother. In order to investigate the aforementioned relationship, a quantitative research design was employed, employing a sample of secondary education students (N = 825; Mage = 12.98; SDage = 1.00). Structural equation modeling was utilized as the analytical tool to examine the collected data and evaluate the proposed mediation models. The findings of the study indicate that both forms of filial piety act as mediators between perceived maternal involvement and academic motivation.
