Paper Title
"Art and Oppression: The Influence of Political Regimes on Artistic Expression and the 'Prisoner' Project"
Abstract
How can political regimes be seen through art? How have artists, with their unwavering courage, in authoritarian, totalitarian, and fascist regimes managed to express their voices, even when silenced by the social order?
History has many examples of artists in the visual arts, music, literature, film, performance, and other art directions confronting unjust and illegal political forces, fearlessly showing society this terrible problem through their works. Political regimes, especially authoritarian and totalitarian governments, have long viewed art as a threat and a tool. Such regimes often control artistic expression to suppress dissent and, conversely, advance their ideology.
This article examines the problem of political imprisonment and condemnation for dissent and how political regimes, through oppression and control, have historically shaped and suppressed artistic expression. In addition, the article examines how international attention to this problem contributes to its mitigation and resolution and presents the author's project to bring global attention to this severe but hidden problem.
