ANALYSIS OF FUSION SPLICING LOSS OF SMF-28 AND R37003 SINGLE MODE OPTICAL FIBERS

Abstract
This paper presents an analysis of fusion splicing loss in SMF-28 and R37003 single-mode optical fibers using Matching mode field theory, Phase-front transformer model, and Fresnel theory. It is found that the loss calculated by Fresnel theory is very low and can be eliminated. As the splicing time increases, the loss calculated by Matching mode field theory decreases, whereas another loss calculated by the Phase-front transformer model increases. Applying the standard fusion splicing conditions and the standard structure of both optical fibers results in a total fusion splicing loss of 1.777 dB, which is high for optical communication systems. To achieve a lower fusion splicing loss, the analysis of fusion splicing loss in SMF-28 and R37003 by adjusting the R37003 core radius is then presented. Finally, by reducing the R37007 core radius from the standard value of 1.45 µm to 0.97 µm and varying the splicing time from 11 sec to 1 sec, the total fusion splicing loss can be reduced from 1.777 dB to 0.0242 dB, which is acceptable for optical communication systems.
