Teaching writing in English: Practices of community English language teachers
Abstract
Writing skill is an inevitable skill for the EFL learners. However, in the context of Nepal teaching writing is not an easy job for the teachers who teach in the secondary level in community schools. The main purpose of the study was to explore how English language teachers of community schools practice teaching writing in English at secondary level. As we know, writing is one of the productive skills of language through which we transmit our thoughts, feelings and ideas from the mind to paper. This study incorporates topics of writing including its importance, the stages of writing, and strategies of teaching writing and different aspects of teaching writing. Similarly, this study was guided by an interpretive paradigm, in which I assumed that people have differing perspectives and practices regarding teaching writing skills. My study has a qualitative approach to look into the perceptions, understanding and experiences of the participants. Hence, according to the nature and demand of my study, I adopted interviews as my data collection tool. My participants were five secondary level teachers of English from five different schools in Dang district. The findings and conclusions of this study revealed that teachers had applied different techniques and strategies such as guided writing, free writing, use of samples, framework skeleton, technology support, language games, competitions and project works. The teachers were well familiar with different aspects writing skills, such as mechanics, content, genre, grammar, etc.
