Evolution of Digital Apps for Learning Disabled Children: A Review Study
Abstract
Learning disability is a neurological disorder cause of genetic, maturation delay, neurological damage, environment and nutritional deficiencies which affects the brain’s ability to send, receive and process information. It is indeed sad to realize that a significant portion of student population across the world has learning disabilities. There are 5-9% of people having learning disabilities of general population (Vuleta, 2020) and estimated prevalence rates of LD in India range widely between 2% and 19% (Misquitta & Panshikar, 2022). Learning disability first time considered as benchmark disability in RPWD Act, 2016 by India. According to National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) 34% students had specific learning disabilities in U.S. by the year 2017-18. Mostly education systems and institutions across the world are not equipped to help students who learn differently and might need special assistance in the classroom (Soulunii, 2019). This gap can be filled by using digital apps education system. Literature showed that during Covid-19 pandemic language apps, virtual tutoring, video conferencing tools or online learning software has been a significant surge. This paper looks at the evolution of digital apps that can help students with learning disabilities to learn according to their needs. These apps explored according to dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia and other learning disabilities. This review study based on systematic literature review selected studies, published from 2011 to 2022. The selected research articles & e-content included both observational and experimental studies conducted in India as well as at global level. Further, study suggested that these apps will meet the learning goals of the learning disabled (LD) students, keep the classroom motivated and reach every type of learner.
