A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF SUICIDE AMONG IMMIGRANTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN THE CONTEXT OF ACCULTURATION

Abstract
Abstract - This PRISMA-model study of 17 peer-reviewed articles indicates a significant relationship between acculturation and suicidal behavior among immigrants to the United States. All studies provided empirical evidence supporting, refining, or refutingthe Healthy Immigrant Effect, Social Integration, and Acculturative Stress theories.Seven studies claimed a lower risk of suicide among foreign-born immigrants; an equal numberclaimed a higher risk.Four studies indicated undesirable social interactions and a lack of host-country acceptance as a factor correlating with suicidal behaviors. Seven studies found elevated suicidal behavior correlatingwith acculturation and psychological stressors, with social support dampening the impact of acculturative stress.
