Paper Title
NEW STRATEGIES FOR THE PROMOTION OF BLOOD DONATIONS IN COMMUNITIES
Abstract
Cuba is among the 12 Latin American countries with the highest rate of voluntary blood donations. Our institution contributes to the quality of health care with more than 12,000 blood donations annually; however, the last decade has seen a reduction in the number of donations per year. It is necessary for the population to understand the need to carry out this voluntary act that can save a person's life. This is why we conducted this research, a quasi-experimental study of community intervention, with the aim of implementing new strategies for the promotion of voluntary blood donations in communities. A population of 2568 individuals belonging to a Health Area was studied, and a simple random sample of 685 people was taken. Of these, 18% agreed to donate blood at the start of the study. After the community intervention, this figure rose to 28%, which allowed us to conclude that the application of new strategies to promote blood donations in the community is effective and allowed us to increase the number of people who voluntarily decided to donate blood, as a humanitarian act that saves human lives.
