Examining Rural-Urban Linkages and their Influence on Sustainable Rural Development: A Case Study of Kathmandu Valley and its Peripheral Areas
Abstract
This research paper investigates the center-peripheral interplay between rural-urban linkages and their consequential impact on sustainable rural development. It acknowledges the multilayered nature of these linkages in shaping the socio-economic landscape. The paper aims to elucidate the mechanisms through which rural and urban areas influence each other, leading to synergies or disparities that significantly affect the prospects of sustainable rural development. The study employs a methodical approach known as the case study method to comprehensively understand the dynamics of rural-urban linkages. Qualitative interviews are conducted to capture insights from various stakeholders, while quantitative data analysis is employed to provide a structured understanding of the interactions. The study reveals complex dynamics among rural entrepreneurs in peripheral regions as they interact with urban hubs. Divided into three crucial categories—Collaborations for Market, Transforming Peripheral Attributes into Assets, and Leveraging Knowledge for Innovation—these connections significantly bolster business operations in less central zones, vital for competitiveness. Collaborations deepen market insight and economic growth, while converting rural attributes into market assets leverages authenticity and sustainability. Simultaneously, tapping into urban knowledge and rural wisdom sparks innovation through shared learning and collaboration, contributing to the advancement of both urban and rural development. The study emphasizes economic interdependence, social interactions, and environmental effects. Peri-urban regions bolster urban economies but pose waste and land use challenges. Recommendations encompass integrated planning, local waste solutions, skill development, cultural preservation, and enhanced rural services. Implementing these steps is crucial for fostering balanced, sustainable development in this intricate context.
