Paper Title
A Comparative Study on The Business Management of Long-Term Care Institutions for Elderly People with Dementia in Taiwan

Abstract
In recent years, Taiwan has been experiencing population aging, leading to a growing number of individuals with dementia and an increased demand for long-term care services for elderly people with dementia. However, according to statistics from the Social and Family Affairs Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, as of January 2023, there are only 17 long-term care institutions that have dedicated units for dementia care. In light of the rising demand for specialized care, the shortage of long-term care facilities for elderly people with dementia has become evident. However, research on the operational and managerial aspects of long-term care facilities with dementia care units is limited. Hence, this study has designed a questionnaire regarding the operational and managerial aspects of long-term care institutions and conducted on-site interviews with three long-term care institutions equipped with dementia care units to address this research gap. Furthermore, this study examines the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) of these three long-term care institutions by employing SWOT analysis, a method commonly used in business management research. The results indicate that although these three institutions have individual strengths, they share common weaknesses, such as the high average age of caregivers (50 years old), low rates of knowledge–action integration (below 30%), and the absence of LED smart lighting systems. Furthermore, the opportunities they share include government subsidies and potential collaborations with other industries, whereas the threats they collectively face involve changes in long-term care policies. Finally, this study summarizes the similarities and differences in the operational and managerial aspects, dementia care models, and information technology implementation among the three long-term care institutions with dementia care units. This study also employs the threats, opportunities, weaknesses, and strengths (TOWS) analysis to identify optimal strategies, providing insights for operational improvements.
