Paper Title
THE ROLE OF MEN IN ENHANCING GENDER EQUALITY IN HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
Abstract
Abstract - Recently there have been much discourses and debates about the role of men in enhancing gender equality. As part of the interventions to address gender inequalities in the public sector, the government of Ghana launched the He for She agenda in Ghana in 2017. The project aimed at encouraging men to play significant roles in efforts to enhance gender equality. Utilizing the qualitative methodology and hegemonic theoretical frame work, this paper explores the perceptions, strategies and challenges of active engagement of males in gender equality. The population involved both males and female in senior and middle level positions in higher educational institutions. Methods of data involved individual and focus group interviews. The majority of participants were unaware of the program and this points out to the limited efforts to enhance this agenda in government institutions and organisations. There were also various nuances and mixed feelings among participants. We argue that active contribution, support and participation of men and boys are essential to the gender equality advocacy. There must also be male-oriented equality policies and strategies to complement the agenda.
