Parental Attachment, Borderline Personality, Clingingness To Dating Partner, And Violence In Dating Relationship
Abstract
In this study,researcher investigated the relationships between attachment with parents, borderline personality, clingingness to dating relationship, and inflicting or receiving dating violence, and explored the accountability of parental attachment, borderline personality, and clingingness todating partners fordating violence. The participants were students in universities located at Seoul or suburbs, whohad heterosexual dating relationships. Correlational analyses revealedthat feeling alienated from parents was positively related to clingingness in heterosexual dating relationships, while trust in parents was negatively related to fear of rejection from boy/girl friend or doubting boy/girlfriends. Trust in parents was negatively related with inflicting dating violence, whereas feeling alienated from parents was positively related with. And feeling alienated from parents was also positively related with receiving dating violence. Fear of rejection from boy/girl friend or doubting him or her was also positively related with receiving dating violence. Clingingness and borderline personality were closely correlated each other, and those variables had positively correlated. Students who inflicting and not receiving dating violence revealed higher level of clingingness and borderline personality than students who had not have inflicted and received dating violence. Step-wise regression analysis indicated that doubting boy/girlfriends, trust in parents, fear of rejection from boy/girlfriends, feeling alienated from parents accounted for almost10% of the variance in inflicting dating violence. It was found that feeling alienated from parents and fear of rejection from boy/girl friend was predictors for receiving dating violence.And, it was found that borderline personality was fully mediating on the relations of clingingness to dating violence of college students. This investigation suggests that parental attachment and borderline personality are determinants for clingingness to dating partners and dating violence
