EVALUATION OF TURKISH BUSINESSES' ADAPTATION TO THE EUROPEAN GREEN DEAL BY SWOT ANALYSIS

Abstract
Abstract - The European Green Deal is a strategy for growth and change introduced by the European Commission in December 2019, with Europe's plan to become the first climate neutral continent by 2050. Accordingly, as of 2030, additional taxes come to the fore on the circulation of products belonging to companies that do not reduce greenhouse gas emissions at predetermined rates in European markets. In this context, many governments, companies, relevant units, non-governmental organizations, regulatory bodies and all relevant stakeholders in many countries of the world have started preparations. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the compliance of Turkish businesses with the European Green Deal with SWOT analysis. There are five priority sectors (iron-steel, cement, aluminum, fertilizer and electricity sectors) that are considered carbon-intensive sectors within the scope of the European Green Deal. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a total of 30 business owners/shareholders, 6 from each sector. The interview data obtained were supported by the findings of the research documents made in the literature on the subject. As a result of the content analysis, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of businesses in Turkiye towards the compliance with the European Green Deal were determined. In addition, various suggestions have been developed based on the findings obtained. It is thought that the evaluation of the findings made in the research and the suggestions presented will accelerate the adaptation of the businesses in Turkiye to the requirements of the European Green Deal and can guide the macro policies to be developed in this context.
