NATURAL PRODUCTS IN THE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF DISEASES OF THE ORAL CAVITY

Abstract
Abstract - Diseases of the oral cavity such as dental carriers, gingivitis, periodontitis, oral submucous fibrosis, oral cancer etc. are the one of the most common health problems challenged by over 3.5 billion people per year in the world. Recent developments in the path physiological understanding of oral diseases have improved the treatment modalities for the better management of these diseases and developed individual treatment plans. However, these therapeutics suffer from limited clinical success because of the mono-targeted approach and adverse side effects of the therapeutic agents like vomiting, diarrhea, inflammation, tooth staining etc. Moreover, long term treatment can increase the resistance to these therapies and make patients immune compromised and susceptible to opportunistic infections and other diseases. Therefore, alternative treatment approaches are required for the prevention and treatment of these diseases. Research over the past couple of decades have provided significant advancements in developing novel treatment approaches that are safe, wide spectrum, and efficacious for the prevention and treatment of various diseases.
