The Relationship Between Collegiate Athletes' Perfectionism and Subjective Well-Being

Abstract
Background: Researchers have urged for a multifaceted study of perfectionism and mental and physical adaptability. They also examined the negative impacts of maladaptive perfectionism on psychological and physical change and the beneficial effects of adaptive perfectionism, positive affect, and subjective well-being. Since great athletes in demanding sports often strive for perfection, understanding the relationship between perfectionism, mental and physical adaptability, and quality of life is crucial. Purpose: This article explored the relationship between personal perfectionism (adaptive and maladaptive) and subjective well-being through a literature review. Results: Past studies have indicated that there is a correlation between adaptive perfectionism and positive subjective well-being, however maladaptive perfectionism has been demonstrated to have a negative correlation with positive subjective well-being. The perfectionism-well-being relationship may also be modulated by stress coping strategies. Conclusions: Future research might study the association between perfectionism, stress coping strategies, and subjective well-being in college athletes to understand their mental and physical adaption challenges better and assist their progress.
