Health Care Industry Demands Different Type of Leadership- A Compassionate Approach

Abstract
The study aims at the most important and fundamental issues of humanity,that is the health care. Generally, all over the world, and specifically in South Asia, healthcare industry plays vital role towards not only maintaining but also helping individuals to be live healthy and successful life. In this way, health care institutions have vital control towards developing an healthy and progressive society. Various leadership theories and approaches have been utilized by numerous researchers to manage organizations; however, healthcare industry needs a different type of leadership which should focus on three important ingredients:1) empathetic listening,2) understanding others before getting understood, 3) supporting others. These are the ingredients of compassionate leadership that has its central point to facilitate and support others to move forward. Compassionate leaders are not easily found in society, they are rare species; however compassionate leadership can be developed and inculcated in mangers. The study is qualitative in nature, hence we conducted interviews from thirty-seven (37) healthcare experts from managerial positions and seven (6) consultants from all over the country. All he interviews were transcribed and important themes were extracted. We found that health care leadership needs a leadership having the following ingredients: 1) ability to create a positive attitude, 2) instant and empathetic listening quality,3) ready for investing time for the people 4) treating the disease and not the person, and finally 5) generating a collaborative environment of learning organization as part and parcel of society. Findings show that compassionate leader with these qualities can be very useful and beneficial for others through connecting, establishing relationship, helping, and giving motivation to others to move forward, and thus ultimately developing and fashioning out healthy people, ready to serve the humanity and society. The study follows a pragmatic approach, that's why based on the actual data from experts, the study substantiates the golden rule that compassionate leadership treats others as he/she wants others to treat him/herself. The study presents ample amount of theoretical as well as practical implications for practitioners and policymakers. Finally, the study provides also useful recommendations for future research.
