Artificial Intelligence in Human Resource Functions: A Bibliometric Analysis of Peer-Reviewed Research 1990-2022

Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies are swiftly integrating into many functions of organizations as a competitive drive to enhance innovation, productivity, efficiency, and better decision-making. Despite many gaps and inconsistencies, AI in HR disciplines is gaining momentum. For the benefit of researchers, academics, policymakers, and practitioners, this study highlights the trends, key themes and players, gaps and future directions. This research analyzes the 437 peer-reviewed research indexed in the Scopus database between 1990 to 2022. The articles were coded and analyzed for themes, topics, and findings using Excel, VOS Viewer, and R software. The results highlight AI in many HR functional disciplines, e.g., employee development and motivation, coaching, mentoring, performance improvement, employee relations, creating organizational culture, and innovations are yet to explore. AI in HR informatics in high-tech firms is the dominant theme in most publications. While there is increasing attention from researchers and practitioners, there are many gaps between the promise, potential, and real AI applications in HR disciplines. A higher knowledge gap raised many unanswered questions regarding AI's legal, ethical, and moral aspects in HR disciplines. The study is limited to peer-reviewed empirical, theoretical, conceptual, and review publications in the Scopus. The implications for theory, practice, and future research directions are discussed.
