Case Study: Cost Reduction for Sewage Sludge Disposal by Installing the Self-Oxidation Process in a Field-Scale Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant

Abstract
The apprehension of local governments in Japan regarding the future, such as a shrinking population and increasing percentage of the senior population, grows annually, and reducing the costs of operating local government services can be the right direction to alleviate such worries. Sewage treatment service is a heavy burden that every local government must manage. In this study, a self-oxidation process, possibly the cheapest sludge reduction process, was installed in a municipal sewage treatment center, and a case study was conducted. According to the case study, the sewage treatment cost of 180,000 USD was saved during the first year. The data in the second year will be critical to evaluate the sustainability of the process.
