Social Studies Teacher Candidates’ Views About Course Books
Abstract
The aim of this study is to reveal the opinions of Social Studies teacher candidates about the textbooks taught in secondary school with a critical point of view. The study is important in terms of how social studies teacher candidates make sense of textbooks in teaching tools and materials, how they list the criteria of a "good textbook" and to reveal the qualities of the textbooks that remain in their minds in their education lives.In addition, their views on the necessity of the courses they took to analyze the textbooks during their undergraduate education were examined. The opinions of pre-service teachers regarding the transformation of textbooks in line with the new generation technological developments were determined, also. Phenomenology, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the study. The study group of the study consists of 90 teacher candidates from 4th grade who are continuing the Social Studies teaching undergraduate program in the 2019-2020 academic year at two state universities. In this study, social studies teacher candidates were asked to indicate the books of the courses they liked to study during their education, along with their reasons. At this point, the frequency of liking social studies textbooks has been revealed. It has been determined that social studies teacher candidates attribute meanings to the textbook. In addition, which of the educational tools contributed more, which criteria “a good textbook should have, language and expression, visual layout, scientific content, design and physical structure) were examined from the perspective of social studies teacher candidates. The opinions of teacher candidates for using textbooks during undergraduate education were taken in terms of the necessity of the courses taken. In addition, considering the technological developments, the transformation of textbooks was questioned in line with the opinions of pre-service teachers.
