Analysis of the Effectiveness of Lean Six Sigma in Improving Healthcare: A Text Analytics Approach

Abstract
Introduction: Because of the worst pandemic of Covid-19, world healthcare demand is growing at a fast pace. Just like other sectors of world economy, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused severe disruptions in the healthcare sector too. One of the noticeable area in the healthcare, which is badly hampered due to Covid-19, is supply chain. This has resulted in a decreased efficiency in overall processes of healthcare organizations. Consequences of a poor supply chain and a bad demand management is two folded. One, it will end up increasing the inventory cost for the pharmaceutical companies, resulting in increase of healthcare services. Second, it will result in the non-availability of medicines for patients in the times of need. Shortage of medical/healthcare equipment will make the communities face an increase in the number of infected people and can further initiate the rate of this pandemic. Therefore, an efficient way to make optimal use of the available healthcare equipment and to manage the demands in the healthcare supply chain is imperative. In order to have efficient operations management, Six Sigma methodology has been applied largely in the healthcare. A good healthcare system results in a productive human resource. It is the standard of health conditions, which determines the human capital of a country (Muzna, Osama, Quratul, Bushra, & Nanthini, 2020). For long, health care organizations have been struggling to address the challenge of offering value for money while staying cost effective at the same time. In a health care system, just like any other, optimal allocation and utilization of resources (inputs) is imperative to produce value added goods and services (output) (Jonathan, Irene, & Peter, 2016). Efficiency is the central tenet in management health care management policies. Because of the peculiar nature of health care, it is even more important to run the health care systems at higher efficiency levels. Inefficiency in healthcare management poses serious concerns. Inefficiency could result in wastage of resources, which could otherwise have been utilized, to provide healthcare to a larger number of people. In efficient utilization of resources could result in scarcity in some other sector of the economy. In efficient utilization and wastage of resources could also result in demotivating those factions of the society, who want to contribute in health care projects. This could end up declining the healthcare progress, hamper social fabric and social welfare (Cylus J., Papanicolas I., Smith P.C. 2016). The underlying idea of this research is to analyze how effective the project based, quantitative and comprehensive management approach of lean six sigma has been, in keeping the healthcare sector financially viable and at the same time providing quality healthcare to the needy communities in time.
