Academic Literacy Demands and Curriculum Design Practices

Abstract
Academic Literacy is a social practice that involves both reader and larger community context and occurs as a result of contextualized learning environment (Gee,2015; Holschuh& Paulson,2013; Poster,2018).Academic literacy is defined as an ability to write for different purposes, audiences and occasions; to access, interpret and evaluate information; think critically; reflect one’s performance; creates new texts and new knowledge. (Yancey,2009). Academic literacy expects to have academic tasks which includes formulation of ideas; memorizing concepts to generate ideas and resource availability to students for generating a product. (Doyle,1983)75% community college students and more than 50% of four year college students are unprepared to meet the literacy demands of the college(ACT 2013;American Institute for Research,2006)Reading assistance college classes dating back before 1900s(Stahl & King 2009).Faculty avoiding reading techniques or disciplinary literacy practices in their respective classes.(Stahl & Armstrong,2018,p-58) Keywords - Pedagogy, Cognitive skills, Metacognition, Curriculum Designs, Instructional Design
