Paper Title
Stunting and the Role of Children’s Milk Consumption in Central Jakarta, Indonesia
Abstract
The prevalence of stunting in under five children in Indonesia is quite high. One in three children under five in Indonesia is stunted. Studies found a relationship between children's linear growth and intake of animal protein, especially milk. This study aims to describe milk intake of children 25-30 months of age and determine the difference between milk consumption and incidence of stunting among children aged 25-30 months. This study used a case-control design. The number of samples was 121 children aged 25-30 months which were divided into two groups, namely the case group and the control group. All children were exclusively breastfed. The research was conducted in Sawah Besar and Gambir sub-districts, Central Jakarta in September 2019. Data analysis used chi square test. There was significant relationship between mother's education, frequency of milk consumption per day, and the amount of milk consumption per day with stunting incidence. Mother's education lower than junior high school, consumption of drinking milk less than twice a day and drinking millk less than 500 ml per day increased the risk of stunting by 2.8, 3.1 and 4.0 times, respectively. Stunting children consumed less frequent and less amount of milk compared to normal children, thus daily consumption of milk in sufficient frequency and sufficient amount could reduce the risk of stunting among children 25-30 months old.
