Strategy to Protect Springs as a Source of Drinking Water for Communities in the Banggai Kepulauan Karst Area

Abstract
This paper proposes a spring protection strategy that includes the physical condition of the spring source (flow discharge and its quality), the condition of the surrounding biological ecosystem, the catchment area of the spring, and the protection of the spring in terms of juridical aspects (legal certainty). Measures to protect springs as a source of drinking water for communities in the Banggai Kepulauan karst area include checking water quality from contamination of pollutants, especially E. coli bacteria, characterizing water pollution contamination and determining sources of pollution in the catchment area, and conducting a health risk analysis of the impact of drinking water pollution. To conserve and protect springs as a source of drinking water for the community in a sustainable manner, it is necessary to carry out activities to maintain the area of land cover in the form of forests in the catchment area and its surroundings, which means that forest conversion activities should not be carried out to the form of land use that is cultivation such as settlements, plantations, animal husbandry, and moorings Keywords - Protection Strategies, Drinking Water Sources, Karst Banggai Kepulauan
