Effectiveness of Oral Iron Dose in Treating Iron Deficiency Anemia in Pregnancy

Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia is most common in pregnant women. Oral iron is the most widely used therapy worldwide. The use of the right dose will determine the effectiveness of oral iron in patients with iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of oral iron doses in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy. This study uses a literature review design. All references were obtained from the Pubmed and Science Dricet journal database for the last 5 years (2017-2022). The results of the literature review show that in terms of efficacy, daily oral iron dose 2 times a day has better efficacy than dose 1 time a day, but dose 1 time a day has the advantage of fewer side effects. Another result was obtained that daily oral iron dose 1 time a day and non daily oral iron dose 1 time a day had comparable efficacy, but non daily oral iron had fewer side effects and smaller doses. Based on the results of this comparison, oral iron supplementation at a dose of 2 times a day on alternative days can be considered to be tested in pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia, with the aim of optimizing the efficacy of oral iron, but on the other hand, being able to increase the acceptability of pregnant women to supplements.
