We clarify the degree to which project managers' leadership competencies impact the success of construction projects in Vietnam. All data are collected from in-depth interviews with 12 experts who are scientists and professional construction project managers, case study results of 3 construction projects in Vietnam, and survey results of 405 project managers who are directors/heads of construction project management departments in Vietnam. The data analysis shows the impacts of 10 leadership competencies of project managers on the success of construction investment projects in Vietnam in descending order starting with critical analysis and judgement, managing resources, achieving, conscientiousness, engaging communication, empowering, motivation, influencing, sensitivity, and developing. In addition, we point out differences in project managers' leadership competencies and construction project success based on characteristics of project managers such as age, level of education and years of experience, and characteristics of construction projects including total investment, implementation time and number of engaging contractors. Based on the study results, some recommendations are provided to improve the leadership competencies of project managers to contribute to the success of construction projects in Vietnam in terms of efficiency, saving resources, and promoting economic development of Vietnam in general.
