Challenges of Distance Learning for Algerian Students during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract
The worldwide education system has been severely affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March 2020 teachers witnessed the shutdown of schools and colleges/universities. Most teaching and learning activities were conducted online. This is to avoid the spread of Covid-19 and to ensure the safety of the teachers as well as the students. However, since the enactment of online learning in March 2020, online learning is still perceived as less effective than offline learning. Conventional classrooms shifted to online classrooms which profoundly impacted teachers‟ and students‟ closed interaction, making a paradigm shift in the teaching-learning process, inter alia. Henceforth, the researcher did a quantitative study by using an open-ended questionnaire to apprehend The respondent sample of 120 students‟ opinions about the challenges of having online classes when learning the English Language at the management school. The main challenges faced by the students in joining the online classes were namely lecturers‟ poor performance, students‟ poor independent study skills, ineffective time management, technical issues with the use of technology, the quality of the Internet, prior knowledge of ICT, family income, students‟ low motivation, and unsupportive environment. The government had taken certain remedial measures to overcome the challenges in online classes and reduce the digital divide.
