Reading English Literature: Voices from The Global South
Abstract
This paper presentsBrazilian university students' impressions of studyingEnglish literature.Senior English students at UFG in GoiĆ¢nia, Brazil,participated in this interpretive research whosemain goal was to investigate their negative and positive impressions ofthat experience.The data was collected throughout 22 years of teaching, using questionnaires, video recordings of my lessons, narratives, journals, written feedback and interviews.The results cover a range of issues, from the typical challenges foreign readers face, such as linguistic limitations and lack of cultural knowledge, to their cognitive and affective reactions to that experience.
