Systematic Review and Analysis of Content of Patient Education Obstacles in Iranian Hospitals

Abstract
Patients' education is considered as one of their important rights. This study aimed to systematically review and analyze the content of patient education obstacles in Iranian hospitals. Required information was searched on the Internet using terms such as "obstacle", "Iran", "patient education", "medical education", "barrier", "challenge", "problems", from databases of "Magiran", PubMed", Google Scholar", "Iranmedex", and "SID". In addition, gray literatures as well as unpublished documents were also reviewed. Data were analyzed using Donabedian model. Inadequate skills of health care providers, lack of facilities and equipment for patient education, and shortage of budget and human resources were the most important obstacles in "inputs" section. Furthermore, obstacles in "process" section included lack of attention and support by managers, patients' unawareness from their rights, absence of a monitoring and feedback system, and lack of cooperation and coordination among members of the medical team. Finally, low importance of patient education among providers and patients' thinking of education to be ineffective were the two most important obstacles in "output" section. Patient education faces with different challenges in Iranian hospitals. Considering the significant importance of such education and its effect on patients' health, planning and implementation of proper interventions are essential in order to lift up the above-mentioned obstacles.
